The Autism Learning Center is a school for autistic kids run by the Autism Learning Foundation. This is a unique project located in the heart of Gilbert, Arizona. Prior to starting the project this site was an existing residential lot which presented challenges to overcome as a part of the development of the Autism Learning Center.
Millett Engineering and Consulting play an important role through the steps of an administrative design review and construction documents. The administrative design review process in the Town of Gilbert was required to allow permitting for a school on an existing lot zoned single-family (SF-35). As a part of the stipulations of the design review the existing onsite buildings and site needed to be upgraded which included parking, fire lines for fire protection, and an upgraded access driveway.
The challenge that this site development faced was to limit the cost as much as possible to the non-profit charity yet provide all of the required improvements necessary to the function of the school. Some of the creative solutions found along the way included utilizing the existing flood irrigated areas of the lot for retention requirements and limiting all onsite retention basins to less than 1 foot of ponding within the basin areas as to limit the drainage facility improvement costs.
